- 1849-D Liberty Head Half Eagle. VF-30 (PCGS). OGH--First Generation. Medium gold surfaces are uncommonly well defined for the assigned grade with ample evidence of a modest semi-prooflike finish evident in the fields as the coin dips into a light. Wispy hairlines and a few moderate size marks are mentioned for accuracy. One of the more underrated issues in the Dahlonega Mint half eagle series, the 1849-D is more elusive in today's market than a relatively generous mintage of 39,036 pieces might imply. Doug Winter (2003) ranks this issue 10th in overall rarity among the 26 issues in this popular and widely collected Southern gold series. Provenance: From the Marc Kravit Collection. PCGS# 8242.
