THE BOYLSTON COLLECTION, PART IV A highly desirable Civil War date in high grade. Frosty surfaces offer a warm satiny glow on the silver-gray fields and sharply struck devices. A strong glass fails to reveal any serious marks of any kind, and the strike, typical of the date, offers a bold definition of the details. As the Civil War began to rage in the east, folks hoarded federal coinage, leading to a shortage in circulation, and thus the first large scale issuance of federal paper banknotes for use in commerce. Despite the hoarding, precious few GEM quality examples survive for collectors today. PCGS 18, NGC 5. Recent examples have sold in the $5,400 to $8,400 range and the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $11,000. PCGS has graded just five in MS66+ finer and no doubt these figures include some duplication. A pleasing coin for the collector. Cert. Number 32548416 PCGS # 6302
