- 1868 Pattern Five-Cent Piece. Judd-627, Pollock-696. Rarity-7-. Copper. Plain Edge. Proof-64 RB (NGC). Obverse of similar style to the circulating nickel three-cent pieces of the era, reverse with scanty laurel wreath, IN GOD WE TRUST above in tiny letters, 5 / CENTS on two lines within. Largely subdued mint orange with a trace of royal blue iridescence. The devices are somewhat frosted and sit nicely against a mirrored background. Struck on a quarter dollar-sized planchet with a broad, flat border. The uspatterns.com website notes that these were offered in sets by the Mint along with the one-cent and three-cent issues of the same general type; the site also notes perhaps just a half dozen examples of Judd-627 are extant. One of four grading events for the variety listed by NGC, two of those Proof-64 BN; the present coin at Proof-64 RB; and one other example called Proof-65 RB. A rarity within the pattern discipline that should see spirited bidding activity among devoted aficionados.
