- 1794 Flowing Hair Half Dollar. O-105a, T-3. Rarity-6(?). Fine-15 (PCGS).
Richly toned in a blend of lavender-gray and olive-charcoal patina, this is a well centered example with lack of border denticulation confined to the lower right obverse. Overall detail to the major design elements is bold for the assigned grade, softness to the upper-central reverse due to sinking of the die that confirms the O-105a attribution. This is the second most plentiful die marriage of the 1794 half dollar, although we caution bidders that this is a key date issue with examples scarce to rare in all grades irrespective of variety. As well, the late die state O-105a attribution is rare with a tentative Rarity-6 rating in the Autumn 2019 revision to Stephen J. Herrman's Auction & Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars: 1794-1839. Tompkins Die Stage 1/3.
Provenance: From the E. Horatio Morgan Collection.
PCGS# 6051. NGC ID: 24E6.
