1868 Ten Cent Pattern Judd-648 R6+ PCGS graded PR64 Brown, CAC Approved.Frosty light olive and medium brown. Sharply struck but the fields are not especially reflective; rather they are covered with fine die polishing lines. The toning suggests the planchet is not "copper" as we know it for our regular large cents but rather a more "brassy" mix of metals (but this is difficult to assess in the slab). The only notable marks are both mint-made flaws: a faint planchet lamination from the rim left of the date through stars 1 & 2 to the dentils at star 3 and a thin, curved struck-through line in the field over the bust (caused by a piece of lint on the die). Might benefit from a proper bath to remove some loose debris on both sides. An attractive example of this very rare Pattern that uses a large cent obverse of the Mature Head design (1843-1857) mated with a new reverse die with a value of TEN CENTS. Our grade is Proof-62. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 7; 2 finer in 65. Estimated Value $4,000 - UP
