- 1899 Morgan Silver Dollar. Proof-68 (PCGS). CAC. The Philadelphia Mint struck 846 proof Morgan Dollars in 1899, survivors of which are fairly scarce in all grades by the standards of the type. As with the present Superb Gem, most original examples of this issue in numismatic hands are deeply and richly toned. But there the similarity between this coin and the typical proof 1899 Morgan Dollar abruptly ends. For this piece is also exceptionally well preserved with no detracting or otherwise grade-limiting hairlines. Indeed, the surfaces readily reveal a silky smooth, virtually pristine "look" even when examined with the aid of a loupe. An all-brilliant finish remains as fresh and vibrant as the day the coin was struck, this despite the depth of toning. Fully struck and simply beautiful, we note more vivid powder-blue, golden-apricot and pinkish-rose highlights to a base of warm antique-copper iridescence. Easily the finest proof 1899 Morgan ever to pass through this cataloger's hands, and of further importance as a pop 1/0 coin at PCGS.
