- THE B.S.T. COLLECTION This GEM ranks among the HIGHEST GRADED 1807 dimes that exists. The mintage of 165,000 was the largest for the denomination to that point and the entire mintage was produced using just a single pair of dies. The JR-1 is considered to be Rarity-2 and most clearly most examples known are well circulated. PCGS CoinFacts estimates 1,000 exist in all grades, about 20% of which are in Mint State (no doubt including much duplication). In GEM or higher, they estimate 20 survive, and is considered to be a major condition rarity. This example is ultra lustrous and awash in a rich navy-blue patina towards the centers and surrounded by a lovely golden tone at the rims. Sharply struck in the centers but there are some minor areas at the peripheries that are weakly struck, a result of the open collar presses employed at the mint at the time. The dies show heavy clashing, as typical for the die marriage. Unabraded surfaces are extremely eye appealing and this GEM is a real delight to behold. Ex Heritage, August 2010, lot 3079; Eugene H. Gardner Collection; Heritage's June 2013 sale of the Gardner Collection, lot 30233; our consignor, via Legend Numismatics. PCGS 9, NGC 13, CAC 2. This was the last PCGS/CAC MS65 example to sell in auction, where it realized $55,813 nearly a decade ago, as such the published levels are no longer accurate. We anticipate this GEM will see very strong bidding when it crosses the block. Good luck. Cert. Number 16074178 PCGS # 4480
