- 1852-D Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 27-S. AU-55 (PCGS). CAC. A wonderfully original example bathed in rich olive-gold and pinkish-gold colors. The strike is typical of the issue with the borders quite blunt, but the focal features are bold apart from softness to the central high points. This "look" becomes standard for Dahlonega Mint half eagles throughout the early to mid 1850s. Plenty of frosty, slightly granular luster remains, and there are no notable marks. With the second highest mintage (91,584 pieces) among half eagles from this coinage facility, the 1852-D is one of the more frequently encountered Dahlonega Mint fives. Few survivors grade finer than EF, however, and with only a handful of Mint State coins extant the is a significant offering of a lovely, CAC-approved Choice AU example.
