- 1887 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. WB-101. MS-66 (NGC). Brilliant, silky-smooth surfaces display a bright satin to semi-prooflike finish. Production of this denomination remained low in 1887 as the nation's economy continued to absorb a backlog of previously hoarded silver coins that had disappeared from commerce in the East early in the Civil War. Only 5,000 circulation strike half dollars were struck for the year, all at the Philadelphia Mint. Along with the other low mintage half dollars produced beginning in 1879, the 1887 is among the more eagerly sought issues in the Liberty Seated series. It is seldom found in Gem MS-65, let alone in higher grades, as here. This piece delivers excellent eye appeal to match the superlative surface quality. Provenance: From the Larry H.
