- This is an impressive GEM example of this very popular Rarity-6 (21-30 minted) pattern half eagle. A capped head of Liberty with three stars above the forehead, a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY flows down around her neck. Reverse shows a perched eagle. Both sides were designed by Longarce. Struck on a broad copper planchet. Exceptional, richly mirrored copper fields blaze with a strong reflection that has iridescent accents of teal-blue, coppery-gold, and lilac-purple. Sharply struck on both sides, this highly original and beautiful GEM offers a high-end, wonderful look. The idea tried on these patterns was to make a wider, but thinner planchet to avoid removing gold from the centers of the regular, thicker planchets and filling the void with lead or some other metal and pocketing the profit. PCGS 2, NGC 1, CAC 2. This GEM is from our July 2018 Regency Auction, sold for $9,988 as part of the Steven Cook Collection. The current Collectors Universe value is $12,000. Since 2018, the market for GEM patterns has picked up with the recent sales of selections from the Bob Simpson Collection. For reference, the Simpson coin was a non-CAC PR63 BN that sold for $7,200 in the 2021 FUN auction. It would not be a surprise if this GEM sold for more this time around. Do not let this opportunity pass you by! Cert. Number 31698271 PCGS # 12078
