- 1890 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Proof-67 * Cameo (NGC). A glittering fully brilliant Gem with intense cameo contrast between the heavily frosted design elements and the deeply mirrored fields. Essentially mark- and blemish-free, even under low magnification. One of 590 proofs of the date struck, precious few of which approach the quality offered here.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
A lovely example of this late date Liberty Seated issue. The low mintage is explained by the state of the coin market at the time. The 1880s were one of rapid growth, spurred by the nationwide excitement arising from the 1883 Liberty nickel without the word “CENTS” on the reverse, but also in what was truly the Golden Age of history appreciation by the American public. Beyond numismatics, this was the scene for hundreds of different specialized books being published, including on state and county histories. Money was abundant, and interest was intense. This spread to collectibles, including stamps, coins, Indian relics, and more. Many different magazines and newspapers were issued. Proof coinage, amply reflected by checking the production figures for, as an example, Indian cents in the Guide Book, reached unprecedented heights.
