- After delivery of the 1805-dated issue, the United States Mint struck no more half dimes until 1829. Clearly this small denomination coin took a back seat to the half dollar, which was the preferred denomination among contemporary bullion depositors during the early 19th century. While this makes sense insofar as these depositors were predominantly banks, merchants and other bullion brokers who preferred large-size coins, the decision of the Mint to honor this preference came at the expense of providing smaller denomination coins that were needed in day-to-day commerce. Some balance was brought back to this situation with the resumption of half dime coinage in 1829, which date corresponds with introduction of the Capped Bust design type for this denomination. This scarce and attractive Gem Mint State 1831 offers an important glimpse into this period in early U.S. Mint history, and it would make an outstanding addition to a high grade type set.
