- 1876-S Liberty Half Eagle. AU-55 (NGC). This is an issue that we rarely offer, and with good reason. The 1876-S Five has an original mintage of just 4,000 pieces, the vast majority of which have long since been lost to commercial use. Of this issue, Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth write in the 2008 edition of the book Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins: 1795-1933:

This date has one of the lowest populations of half eagles certified by the major grading services, and very few examples have appeared at auction in the last two decades. Nearly all of the remaining 1876-S half eagles are heavily worn or damaged. Most of the great collections sold in the past have had only well-worn examples of this date. The Smithsonian specimen is graded only VG-10.

To this important information we add only that the 1876-S is all but unknown in Mint State.
An obviously important find for the advanced Liberty gold collector, this piece is solidly in the Condition Census for the issue. We note a remarkable amount of both detail and luster in a survivor of this issue, the overall strike pleasingly sharp. Even rose-gold color throughout, with no abrasions that we really deem worthy of individual attention.
