- Lot 341 1853 N-1 R2+ PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown.Lustrous mint red fading to bluish steel and olive with 40% of the obverse and 15% of the reverse showing mellowed mint color. Sharply struck with radial lines in all the stars and crisp details in all the devices. The only notable marks are a small carbon spot at the upper left point of star 1, a tiny speck of carbon below star 4, and a small rim nick at star 8. EDS, the earliest state seen, with smooth fields and sharp die lines on both sides. Our grade is MS63, tied for CC#5 overall but second finest of the early die state in the Grellman census. An impressive cent that comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and COL Ellsworth Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer: 2 in 65, 1 in 66.
