- O-101, the only die marriage used to strike all 47,150 half dollars. The story of this KEY issue has been told many times. The mint repurposed an old 1812 die, where the 5 was punched over the 2, creating the overdate. The entire mintage was delivered to the mint treasurer on January 10, 1816. Literally hours later, the building that housed the milling equipment (used to produce and roll out gold and silver planchet stock) caught fire and burned to the ground. Silver coinage did not resume until 1817 and gold coins were not struck again until 1818. The presently offered example is totally original and very eye appealing. Offering a "dusty" olive tan patina with more "crusty" lilac-dove tone. As you rotate this very CHOICE AU 1815 half dollar subtle tinges of apricot-gold come out adding depth and dimension to the great eye appeal. Well struck, the dies were gently clashed, you can see some evidence of LIBERTY in the shield stripes. Only the lightest touch of friction can be seen anywhere on this beauty. Very high end and eye appealing for the assigned grade. PCGS 26, NGC18, CAC 4. This is not the example that sold in Sheridan Downey's August 2017 Mail Bid Sale at $20,680 which was the most recent example to sell. Prior to that, there are APRs for one at $12,925 in the 2017 FUN auction. The Hamilton Collection NGC gold CAC sticker at $34,075 in the 2016 ANA sale, and one in the 2015 FUN for $16,450. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $16,500. A coin this delightfully original and high end will see very spirited bidding from all over the Capped Bust half dollar universe! Because of its KEY date status, the 1815/2 is in demand from collectors in all grades. We expect strong bidding for this beauty when it crosses the block! Cert. Number 27230073 PCGS # 6108
