- 1900 Liberty Head Eagle. JD-1, the only known dies. Rarity-5-. Proof-60 Cameo (PCGS).
Deep golden-orange surfaces display tinges of olive and honey. The fields are strongly reflective, forming a nice backdrop to frosty, fully impressed devices. Grade-defining marks are numerous, yet small enough to be singularly inconspicuous to the unaided eye. Popular with collectors then and now as a turn of the century issue, the 1900 has the highest mintage in the Proof Liberty Head eagle series with 120 pieces produced. Of course, that an issue with just 120 coins struck has the highest mintage for its type confirms the awesome rarity of Proof Liberty Head gold coinage as a group. Not all Proof 1900 eagles struck were sold to contemporary collectors, and those that were not faced destruction in the Mint through melting or, as the present example suggests, were released into commerce. One of perhaps just 50 to 65 specimens believed extant (per John W. Dannreuther, 2018), this coin has much to recommend it.
Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection-Hendricks Set.
PCGS Population: just 4 in all grades in the CAM category.
