- Tompkins Die Stage 3/1, Rea et al. Die State b. Tompkins Plate Coin. Warmly patinated surfaces exhibit champagne-apricot peripheral iridescence that gives way to softer pinkish-pearl gray elsewhere. A bit lightly struck in places, but generally bold, and with appreciable frosty mint luster evident as the coin rotates under a light.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: Another long-time friend purchased raw on eBay more than 20 years ago. This variety is still one of my favorites due to the unique reverse die employed, which I believe was created by Christian Gobrecht not William Kneass. It is distinct in the shape of the wings, shield lines, and the shape of the eagle's eye. Most people only know of Gobrecht being employed by the Mint starting in late 1835, after Kneass was incapacitated by a stroke. However, he did work from time to time for the Mint as early as 1823, and was involved in the making of the punches purchased by the Mint during the 1820s, while working with the Starr Brothers.
