- Superb 1880 Morgan Dollar VAM-6; Spikes Overdate The Finest Graded by PCGS 1880 Morgan Silver Dollar. VAM-6. Top 100 Variety. Second 8/7, Spiked Overdate. MS-65 (PCGS). A breathtakingly beautiful Gem that is sure to catch the eye of advanced Morgan dollar VAM variety enthusiasts. Vivid peripheral toning in iridescent champagne-apricot and cobalt blue frames brilliant centers. Luster is full and intense, an otherwise frosty texture yielding to modest semi-reflective tendencies in the obverse field. The strike is bold to sharp throughout, and a loupe readily reveals the diagnostic spikes at the top of the second digit 8 in the date that are remnants of the 7 underdigit. Writing in the 1997 reference The Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties: The VAM Keys, Michael S. Fey and Jeff Oxman state that fewer than 10 Uncirculated examples of this variety are known. Current third party certification data suggests a slightly higher total, although the 1880 VAM-6 remains a formidable condition rarity in Mint State.
