- Struck in an alloy of 10% silver, 90% copper. Obv: This is one of the perforated cent patterns, with a large central hole with a raised internal lip around it. At the top is the denomination CENT with the inscription ONE TENTH SILVER curving around the bottom. The only other ornamentation is a plain raised ring below the lettering and near the inner hole and raised lip. Rev: An open laurel wreath with no fruit around the central perforation, and the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the border. Warmly and originally toned on surfaces that exhibit strong satin luster. These experimental pieces were an attempt to replace the large cents then in circulation, and a continuation of an effort begun in 1850. It was thought that a coin with some precious metal like silver, might be small enough - yet valuable enough - to circulate in place of the heavy copper cents. The perforation made these planchets difficult to consistently manufacture, however, and these were not adopted, but notice the fact that the size of the present pattern coin is similar in diameter to that of the regular issue Flying Eagle cents adopted later. Sometimes incremental steps must be taken, and this is one of the earliest toward the regular issue small cent still in use today.
