- 1797 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. BB-73, B-1. Rarity-3. Stars 9x7, Large Letters. EF-40 (PCGS).
Glints of frosty mint luster flash into view as the generally pearl-gray surfaces rotate under a light. Iridescent champagne-apricot and powder blue highlights are also evident, mostly on the reverse, and then again in the protected areas around some of the design elements. The impression on that side is drawn trivially to 8:30, the obverse bettered centered, and we note plenty of bold detail at the EF grade level. A tad bright from numismatic handling, yet free of sizeable or otherwise singularly mentionable marks. Q. David Bowers (2013) estimates that 1,300 to 2,100 BB-73 dollars are extant in all grades, although Harry E. Salyards (2022) takes a more conservative approach with an estimate of 500 to 850 survivors. The latter author believes that this variety is scarcer than BB-71, which confirms an earlier finding by Jules Reiver. Astute early dollar variety enthusiasts will find much to admire in the present offering. Salyards Die State II-III, intermediate die state, with no obverse clashing, yet a single die crack between the two lowest ribbon ends at the back of Liberty's head.
