- One of the Finest Known 1872-S Half Eagles 1872-S Liberty Head Half Eagle. MS-61 (PCGS). Here is a rarely offered Mint State example of this scarce S-Mint half eagle issue, one that suffered a high rate of attrition through circulation and melting. This coin escaped both fates and has come down to the present day with full satin to softly frosted luster. Vivid rose-gold color adds appeal, as do surfaces that are pleasingly smooth for the assigned grade. Though 36,400 examples of this issue were produced, even AU coins are difficult to come by, while Mint State survivors are so rare that this is our first offering for such in recent decades. Much of the mintage obviously saw heavy commercial use, which claimed most San Francisco Mint half eagles produced during the Reconstruction era. A rare opportunity for the alert half eagle collector, this coin would serve as highlight in the finest cabinet. Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection-Hendricks Set. PCGS Population: 3; 0 finer.
