- 1857/1860 Pattern Quarter Eagle. Judd-270, Pollock-318. Rarity-7-. Proof-62 RB (PCGS). CAC. A bust of Liberty faces left on the obverse with 13 stars around the border and the date 1857 below. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, and the portrait is very similar to that seen in regular issue nickel three-cent pieces of 1865-1889. On the reverse, a laurel wreath encircles the denomination 2 1/2 DOLLARS and the date 1860. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

This type might be a fantasy striking which, if true, would still be an unusual occurrence given the muling of two dies bearing different dates. (The obverse was previously used in 1857 to strike the Judd-186 pattern cent and the Judd-189 pattern quarter eagle.) Additionally, neither the obverse nor the reverse design displays the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Another theory to explain the existence of this curious and very rare type is put forth by the website uspatterns.com, where it is stated that Judd-270 might represent a pattern striking to test the reverse die. One of only about a half dozens specimens believed extant, this fully original example combines original rose-orange color with warm tannish-brown patina. We note a bold strike to both sides and, while there are no detracting contact marks, scattered carbon spots explain the assigned grade. Small spots on the obverse in the date area and on the reverse at the letters S in DOLLARS are the most useful pedigree markers.

This is the only RB specimen certified for the type, and there are no RD examples listed at either PCGS or NGC.
