- What a stunning, totally original GEM 48-O half dollar! Despite a mintage of 3,180,000, these are VERY RARE in high Mint State grades, especially so in such a lofty state of preservation. Tied for second FINEST graded at PCGS with just two finer. Nothing graded finer than an MS64 graded by PCGS has sold since 2004! WOW--that is RARE indeed! This coin is totally fresh to the market. Our consignor purchased this GEM from a collector who bought it prior to 1988. Ultra high end, this razor sharp and impressive coin has a full strike, all the details are crisply rendered by an exacting blow from the dies. The surfaces have a thick mint frost that radiates from under a gorgeous and totally original olive, tan, gold, and rose on the obverse and a dappled tan-olive on the reverse, that leaves about 50% of the surface sparkling through. The eye appeal is stunning. We love the old time look. We have tried to locate a previous auction appearance for this GEM. It is NOT from the Reed Hawn, Garrett, or Norweb Collections. This coin certainly invites the specialist to further research its provenance. PCGS 4, NGC 0, CAC 1. Obviously this is not the Gardner Collection coin, sold in October 2015 as an NGC/CAC MS65 that realized $32,900. There are two PCGS MS66s finer which may be both Gardner coins (the aforementioned MS65 and the MS66 sold in June 2014) crossed over to PCGS. No PCGS-graded MS65 has sold in auction since August 2004! The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $22,500 and the CAC CPG value is $38,600. This is truly a coin for the advanced Seated Liberty half dollar collector or type collector looking to add an amazing GEM to their cabinet! Cert. Number 41581569 PCGS # 6261.00
