The first year of John Reich's Capped Head half eagle is the most common of this difficult design type. Two die marriages were used to strike the 95,428, this one coming from the scarcer of the two, BD-2 which is considered R-4. Purely original, this pleasing CHOICE Uncirculated has a warm, amber-orange gold color that comes to life with a lovely satiny mint luster. The devices are sharply struck from the terminal die state, will all the details crisp and bold. A few ancient marks are noted with the aid of a strong glass, but these do not detract from the otherwise outstanding eye appeal, and are appropriate for the assigned grade. PCGS 56, NGC 33, CAC 13. The most recent PCGS/CAC MS63 sold in March 2018 for $28,800. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $27,500 and the CAC CPG value is listed at $29,000.
