- An exquisite piece that approaches numismatic perfection. The originality is undeniable as both sides exhibit well blended steel-olive, cobalt blue and silver-apricot patina that yields to a circular area of brilliance at central obverse. Both sides are fully struck and sport bold contrast between frosty motifs and reflective fields that is best appreciated on the obverse. The surfaces are virtually pristine and have obviously been preserved with the utmost care since the day of striking.<p>Proof half dollar production in the United States Mint remained steady in 1897, the mintage of 731 coins comparable to those achieved for the preceding five issues in the Barber series. This issue is one of the easiest in its series to locate with a Cameo finish as certified by PCGS and NGC, although such coins are scarce in an absolute sense and exceedingly rare in the finest grades, as here. One of the most pristine-looking Proof Barber half dollars of any date that we have ever offered, in fact, this outstanding Ultra Gem is highly recommended for inclusion in a world class type set.
