- 1868 Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. OC-P1, Top 30 Variety. Rarity-4. Misplaced Date. Proof-63 Cameo (PCGS). CAC.
Delicate splashes of golden-rose patina highlight the peripheries of this Choice specimen. The surfaces are otherwise ivory-white and frosty, with mirrored fields contrasting the bold design elements. Adding interest is the presence of the upper portions of the 1 and 8 digits visible on the rim, directly below the date and beneath the denticles. Osburn and Cushing call this a Top-30 variety in their reference. The mintage of the 1868 Proof silver dollar was 600 pieces and examples were distributed as part of silver Proof sets. Encountered with a similar frequency as the other Proof silver dollars from the late 1860s and early 1870s, the 1868 is popular with collectors seeking a high quality example of the Liberty Seated type with Motto, though examples showing Cameo contrast are considerably more elusive.
Provenance: From the Collection of Silas Stanley Roberts, 1888-1966.
PCGS# 87016. NGC ID: 252P.
