- This is the finest 1927-S Mercury dime that we have offered in at least two decades. Both sides are intensely lustrous with a bright frosty texture to the finish. Close inspection with a loupe reveals subtle clash marks in the field before Liberty's nose, a die crack in the cap, and areas of "die burn" in the fields before the nose, neck, and behind the base of the cap. All these features are as made, which is also true of the light die polish lines in the reverse field. Of post-production marks or other grade-limiting blemishes there is nothing to report, confirming the accuracy of the desirable premium Gem Mint State grade from NGC. The FB designation is also fully justified as the strike is razor sharp from the rims to the centers. A gentle speckling of pale russet peripheral iridescence on the obverse hardly denies brilliance for this awe-inspiring piece.
As related by the late David W. Lange in his 2005 reference The Complete Guide to Mercury Dimes:
In terms of striking sharpness [the 1927-S] is superior overall to 1924-S and 1925-S and about equal in quality to 1926-S. The sole exception is in the area of full bands, wherein 1927-S is frequently deficient. Flat band or partially split band pieces are the rule.
A relatively limited mintage of 4,770,000 pieces and a heavy rate of attrition through circulation mean that even inadequately struck Mint State survivors are scarce. Given that the offered example is far superior to the typical example described by Lange, its status as a strike and condition rarity par excellence are beyond doubt. Neither the significance nor fleeting nature of this offering can be overstated.
