- Fresh and Original Mint State 1859-D Half Eagle
1859-D Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter 36-CC. Medium D. MS-62 (PCGS). CAC.
This exciting offering stands tall among the half eagle highlights in the Hendricks Set. Seldom does this late date Dahlonega Mint issue appear in Mint State and, in addition to solid technical quality, this piece features the undeniable originality that is becoming increasingly rare in today's numismatic market. Bathed in warm honey-rose color, both sides are boldly to sharply struck overall with full, soft mint luster. Close to Choice preservation and worthy of the strongest bids.
Mintage figures of gold coins at the Dahlonega Mint steadily declined toward the end of the 1850s. By 1859, only 10,366 half eagles were struck, the second lowest figure for the denomination at the Georgia facility. The 1859-D half eagles entered general commerce where they saw the normal rigors of circulation. As with most Southern gold coins, the vast quantity of the roughly 175 known specimens are in VF or EF condition, with AU coins quite scarce. Mint State examples are of exceptional rarity, and we believe that only 10 or so Uncirculated specimens exist. Offered is a superior example with CAC approval that will soon grace the cabinet of a connoisseur.
