- A famous Type 1 twenty date. A large number of 1857-S double eagles sat at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean following the wreck of the S.S. Central America in September that year. Prior to the recovery, the 57-S double eagle, like all Type 1s were very rare in Mint State. Today that is not the case. This lightly circulated example has a rich, nearly complete luster. Just a hint of friction is noted, but the surfaces are free of any serious contact marks (we note some minor ones). The color is exceptional for the grade and this is a very pleasing example.
