- Tompkins Die Stage 3/4, Rea et al. Die State b. Bright, flashy surfaces retain nearly full mint frost and also show considerable prooflike reflectivity in the fields. Pretty champagne-pink peripheral toning is more extensive on the reverse, the obverse with more expansive brilliance in and around the center. Crisp strike detail and freedom from all but wispy handling marks further enhance the eye appeal.
Quarter dollar coinage remained strong in 1832, with 320,000 pieces delivered. Working die life improved greatly over that observed for the preceding year, the Mint requiring only one obverse and two reverse dies in two pairings for the 1832, and both of the latter dies were previously used in 1831. The 1832 Browning-1 is readily identified by large arrow heads, this reverse die shared with the 1831 B-5, B-6, and 1833 B-1 varieties.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: The AU coin I used as my plate was purchased in 2002. It was some years later that I realized I could not find the coin. I finally replaced the missing example many years later with this handsome Choice AU. The missing 1832 B-1 is the only plate coin in my book that I owned but is not being offered in this sale.
