- 1890-CC Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-61 (PCGS). Lustrous BU quality with a bold strike and richly original honey-rose patina to both sides. The mintage for this popular issue is 91,209 pieces, up more than 60,000 coins from the preceding year's double eagle tally at the Carson City Mint. Face value was $1,824,180. Most of the 1890-CC double eagles in Mint State have come to light within the past two decades. Twenty-one years ago in our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Stetson University Collection we noted in part, "PCGS has certified no example higher than MS-61. Most pieces are in notably lower grades, usually EF or AU." Thanks to recent repatriations from foreign bank hoards, some 500 to 750 or so Mint State 1890-CC twenties are now believed extant.
