- 1903 Liberty Double Eagle. Proof-64 (PCGS). OGH. A handsome near Gem Proof boasts rich orange-gold hues throughout, the fields carefully preserved since the time of issue with their delicate mirror surfaces scarcely scuffed while the semi-brilliant devices create contrast. The style of these later Liberty Double Eagle Proofs reduced the depth of frost on the devices and lettering as well as the degree of contrast, so the Deep Cameo effects dwindle considerable after 1900 with only 1 example graded by PCGS, that a 1901 Proof. Cameo Proofs were still produced during this decade, but always in small numbers compared with regular Proofs from the same dies. Examination of the fields finds little to fault, as the reflectivity is undisturbed and hairlines are virtually non-existent. On the reverse there are some minor copper specks, these are usually outgrowths of the alloy used to mix with the gold in the planchets which sometimes produce coppery toned areas as seen on the central devices here. Of the 138 pieces coined, PCGS has not graded any finer than PR-65 (one is a Cameo), and a scant nine this nice. Proof gold is simply the finest caviar of American numismatics, and a double eagle of any date is simply a delight to behold.
