1801 S-223 R1 Error Fraction 1/000. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown.Highly lustrous light olive and steel brown with mellowed mint red in protected areas on both sides. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and the eye appeal is superb. The best identifying marks are a puff of lighter reddish tan toning on the neck and a micro-speck of darker toning in the field off the lower end of the hair ribbon. M-LDS, Breen state V, with a strong cud break at RT in LIBERTY and a narrow rim cud over IB. Some of the leaves in the wreath are softly struck but the devices on the obverse are quite sharp. Graded MS65 Choice and CC#1 as the only truly mint state example of the variety in the Noyes census, his photo #21000. Bland says MS63 and CC#1 in his census. Our grade is MS65 Choice. This is the Noyes plate coin for the variety. Recently submitted for reholdering while in a PCGS holder graded MS65RB (PCGS green label #1459.65/7423523), but apparently too much of the mint color has faded away to retain the "RB" designation. Comes with a superior provenance that is unbroken for nearly 150 years. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer.(PCGS # 36278) Value $60,000 - UP
