- 1878 Morgan Silver Dollar. 8 Tailfeathers. Proof-61 (PCGS). A predominantly brilliant specimen with an enhancing crescent of copper-rose iridescence lining the left obverse border. Both sides are fully struck with particularly intense reflectivity in the fields. The first Proof Morgan dollars were delivered on March 12, 1878, to a quantity of 100 coins. The total mintage of this issue is not known with certainty, but is usually estimated at 500 coins. Although such a figure would indicate that specimens would come on the market with some frequency, that is not true. The Proof 1878 8 Tailfeathers is actually quite rare, perhaps calling into question the estimate. As the only Proof of the 8 Tailfeathers hub variety, the significance of this bidding opportunity can hardly be overstated. Provenance: From the Monterrey Collection. PCGS# 7311. NGC ID: 2572.
