- Endearing Proof 1906 Double Eagle
1906 Liberty Head Double Eagle. JD-1, the only known dies. Rarity-4+. Proof-55 (PCGS).
This handsome, fully original piece exhibits attractive warm honey-orange color. Appreciable reflectivity remains in the fields, although it is only readily evident in the more protected areas around the design elements. Fully struck, as issued, yet with a trace of rub to the high points that, when combined with moderately abraded surfaces, explains the unusual (for the type) Proof-55 grade from PCGS.
The penultimate Proof in the popular Liberty Head double eagle series, the 1906 has a mintage of 94 pieces. David W. Akers' estimate of only 40 to 50 survivors proved accurate despite being put forth in the years prior to third party certification. Even with current PCGS and NGC population data, numismatic scholars are still pretty much in agreement with Akers' original estimate. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2008) account for 45 to 50 coins, PCGS CoinFactssuggests 50 to 60 survivors, while John W. Dannreuther (2018) estimates 50 to 65. Regardless of the estimate, this issue is obviously rare in an absolute sense, as are all classic U.S. Mint Proof gold coins. The offered coin is like many Proofs that we have handled from the extensive Fairmont holdings, in that it has the appearance of a coin that was released into commercial channels and spent decades in a bag alongside circulation strike pieces. Intriguing, as such, and sure to attract considerable interest from bidders.
Provenance: From the Fairmont Collection-Hendricks Set.
PCGS# 9122. NGC ID: 26EU.
