- 1839 Liberty Head Half Eagle. AU-50 (PCGS).
With subtle pale silver highlights to otherwise deep orange surfaces. Sharply defined in and around the centers with ample satin luster remaining, especially on the reverse. Christian Gobrecht's redesign of the half eagle in 1839 introduced one of the longest running series in United States coinage. Sharp-eyed numismatists will spot subtle differences between the obverse portrait used in 1839 and that used in later years. For the first year issues, Liberty's profile has a more refined appearance and the curvature at the base of the portrait is deeper. Many advanced collectors seek to acquire an example of one of the 1839-dated issues to complete their gold type set.
More readily obtainable in an absolute sense than either the 1839-C or 1839-D, the 1839 is the most realistic type candidate from the first year of the Liberty Head half eagle series. The 1839 circulated extensively, however, and the vast majority of survivors are well worn with VF and EF being typical. Scarce in AU, this issue is very rare in Mint State.
