- 1860 Liberty Head Double Eagle. MS-61 (PCGS). This richly original example exhibits handsome color on lustrous, satin to softly frosted surfaces. Boldly defined and worthy of serious bidder consideration. The Philadelphia Mint produced 577,670 circulation strikes of this denomination in 1860. Q. David Bowers estimated a Mint State population of 40 to 60 different pieces when he wrote his 2004 Guide Book of Double Eaglespublished by Whitman. Since then the recovered treasure from the S.S. Republicshipwreck has yielded about 150 more coins, and a few additional pieces seem to have come to light as part of repatriations from foreign bank hoards. Even so, Uncirculated 1860 double eagles remain scarce relative to the demand that such pieces enjoy among today's advanced gold collectors. For the assigned grade, it is difficult for us to imagine a more desirable example than the current offering from the remarkable Fairmont Collection.
