- Undated (Possibly Circa 1793) Washington Success Medal. Large Size. Baker-266B, W-10920. Silvered Brass. Plain Edge. MS-62 (PCGS). CAC.
Exceptionally well struck for the type, even the all-seeing eye in the center of the reverse is quite bold. Pleasing silver gray patina to smooth, virtually unmarked surfaces -- an important absolute and condition rarity among Washington Success medal types, especially with the original silvering fully intact. Baker-266B, in fact, is unpriced in the 1999 edition of Medallic Portraits of Washington by Rulau and Fuld, which reference also makes no mention of silvered examples of the variety. A fantastic piece that belongs in the finest specialized collection.
Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
This particular medal has always been popular. There are certain aspects of it that remain a mystery, as no specific information in print has been seen concerning the circumstances of its issue. The second inauguration of Washington has been a popular attribution. Certainly this is one of the more interesting early Washington items and in Mint State one of the rarest. The present example will attract a lot of attention as it crosses the block.
