- An outstanding coin to represent this conditionally challenged San Francisco Mint issue. Pretty champagne-gold iridescence engages the reverse, as well as the obverse periphery. Satiny mint luster throughout with a sharply executed strike and exceptionally well preserved surfaces.
Typical of most early date Mercury dime issues, especially those from the San Francisco Mint, the 1923-S (6,440,000 pieces produced) is common only in the lowest circulated grades, the result of widespread hoarding during the 1940s and 1950s. It is scarce in VF, EF and AU, and very rare in fully struck Gem Mint State. Writing in his excellent 2005 reference The Complete Guide to Mercury Dimes, David W. Lange ably introduces the 1923-S with the comments:
In estimating the rarity of this issue with full bands, it may be instructional to quote from two detailed analyzes of the Mercury Dime series published by The Coin Dealer Newsletter Monthly Summary in 1977 and 1980, respectively. In March 1977, the late Allen Harriman had this to say: "This issue appears in the top twelve or fourteen 'most elusive with full bands' list of several major dealers. The 23-S is rather easy to find in any grade thru average strike MS-65 - and 'sliders' are relatively common." Three years later, Rick Sear did a follow-up study: "For years this was an underrated date - but no longer. Still, it is a difficult issue to find well struck; both flat bands and fadeaways are often seen."
This is one of only two examples certified finer than MS-65 FB that we have offered in at least 15 years, which confirms that the 1923-S has retained its reputation as a leading strike and condition rarity in this series over the last half century. A stunning premium Gem worthy of inclusion in the finest Mercury dime set.
