- Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State P. Boldly toned with dominant warm golden-gray color and deeper charcoal-russet outlines to many of the design elements. The surfaces have a curious texture, finely matte-like with evidence of smoothing to suggest both whizzing and tooling, although neither detractions are noted on the PCGS insert. Still, though, the in-hand appearance is rather pleasing, and there is plenty of bold detail remaining in most areas.<p>This rare die pairing of the 1806-dated Draped Bust quarter issue shares its obverse with the year's B-6, B-8 and B-10 attributions; the reverse is unknown in any other marriage, and it is readily identifiable (in most die states) by the presence of raised segments through the stars at upper right, the result of some unknown damage to the die. The offered coin from the Tompkins Reference Collection, however, represents the initial die state, without the raised segments, and also free of reverse cracks. Writing in his 2008 reference on this series Steve Tompkins observes, "The early die stage with no reverse die cracks is the rarest."<p><strong>Steve M. Tompkins Commentary:</strong> When this coin was offered to me I already had the Reiver LDS coin in my collection, but this was the rare EDS showing no die cracks on the reverse. I purchased it with the intent to upgrade at some point, although I never located a nicer example.
