1925-D. PCGS graded MS-63.Well struck. Light toning here and there. A few marks otherwise should be MS-64. Scarce date and one of the top dozen of the rarities of the Saint-Gaudens gold double eagle series and a coin which is rarely offered in any grade. It appears that fewer than 900 of these survived in all grades, this out of a mintage of nearly 3 million coins! The vast majority were melted and precious few survived at all. Of those known today the majority as in MS-62 to 64 condition. Gems are extremely rare of this date and mint. These tend to come well struck and lustrous, with strong eye appeal for the collector who is seeking an example. Most of the Denver and San Francisco coins struck during this era were melted and did not escape to Europe where they would have had a chance to survive the melting's of the 1930s.
This one is quite handsome and pleasing for the grade assigned, and worthy of any advanced collection as this semi-key date is quite the challenge to find at all, let alone this nice! Impressive quality yet still in the affordable range for collectors. Just graded for the very first time (PCGS # 9181) Estimated Value $7,500 - UP
