- This is a great looking GEM 1826 O-101a, clearly a CONDITION CENSUS level example, one of the FINEST survivors of this die marriage. An easily identifiable die marriage. The die variety is identified by a short die crack at the bottom of the date on the obverse and a number of markers on the reverse including mostly solid shield lines, a small line on the upper left corner of the ribbon, and the spacing of AT and AM in STATES and AMERICA. A couple of die cracks at the lower reverse define the die state. Both sides of this impressive Capped Bust half have a rich, brilliant mint luster with bold, swirling cartwheel luster. Lovely original toning, mostly in shades of blue and rose yield to brilliant pewter-silver tinged with gold. The luster enhances the razor sharp definition to the classic John Reich design and ultra smooth surface quality. We note a small mark in the obverse field, but it is not distracting to the overall quality and eye appeal of this beauty. We have looked this GEM over and over with a glass, and we are not sure why CAC chose not to sticker this one, the quality is all there! PCGS 9, NGC 17. Just three are graded finer. Going back 1996, only seven PCGS MS66 examples without CAC approval have ever sold in auction, averaging nearly $15,000. None of the three MS67s graded by PCGS have ever sold in auction, so if you are looking for a top tier GEM 1826 half dollar, do not let this opportunity pass you by! Cert.
