- Tompkins Die Stage 2/2, Rea et al. Die State P. <strong>Tompkins Plate Coin</strong>. Wisps of pale champagne-apricot peripheral iridescence hardly deny brilliance for this bright and flashy example. Much frosty luster persists, both sides also retaining bold to sharp definition throughout the design. Wispy hairlines are noted solely for accuracy; there are no sizeable or otherwise individually mentionable marks.<p>One of two Small 0 die pairings for the 1820-dated quarter issue, the Browning-4 shares its obverse with B-5. The reverse is also shared, in that case with the B-1 and B-3 attributions of the 1821-dated issue. Examples of the 1820 B-4 are plentiful in an absolute sense, but that offered here just qualifies for Condition Census based on the grades included in the 2008 Tompkins listing.<p><strong>Steve M. Tompkins Commentary:</strong> The 1820 B-4 was struck in 1821 after the 1821 B-1 and B-3. This can be determined by die stages. This shows that the Mint did not always use dies in the year they were dated.
