- CURACAO. Curacao - Netherlands. 1/4 Gulden, ND (1838). PCGS F-15; Countermark: AU Details. KM-27; Prid-pg.253 Fig.29. Weight: 2.59 gms. Issued by local ordinance Number 212 of 8 June 1838. Script "C" within oval indent. Applied to the reverse of a 1/4 cut 1818-37 Netherlands 1 Gulden of William I. The countermark is deeply applied on a moderately worn host displaying light attractive gray tone with areas of richer coloration. This issue represents that latest official mutilation of cut coinage in the European possessions of the West Indies. Due to the scarcity of coined monies and small change Governor Baron van Raders ordered 6,000 Dutch Guilders to be cut into four parts. These cut monies along with the issues of 1814 and 1818 would remain in circulation until almost the end of the century. Estimate: $300 - $500. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
