- MTGC Consignment. Mintage: 114. 10 graded PR-64, 2 higher at PCGS. NGC has graded only 6 pieces the same and five others at a higher grade level, and between them, the two major services show 62 grading incidents with an unexpected number of these coins having circulated slightly. Of course, twenty dollars was a substantial sum at the turn of the century and one can surmise why an occasional proof example slipped into commerce, but there are no such concerns for this utterly terrific example that shows no evidence of rub from handling. Admittedly, fleeting hairlines show within the fathomless fields, but that is entirely in keeping with the very choice grade level.
Examples of 1902 (and for that matter, any of the later dates in the series) will occasionally surface with cameo qualities, and this example shows only minimal such contrast, not so-designated on the holder, of course. From a technical standpoint, strike quality appears slightly sharper than other proof seen since the feathers on the eagle's neck show considerable separation, and at "TR" in TRUST, tiny die defects rise up between and within the two letters. 1902 famously saw a low circulation mintage by series standards (31-thousand) meaning there are prooflike examples extant, but the proof reverse die with used for other dates in the series matches precisely.
