- Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State unlisted. Deep steely-charcoal and pewter gray fields support coin gray motifs, the contrast between these colors providing a handsome circulated cameo appearance. This piece is well centered in strike, the reverse rotated a few degrees clockwise from normal coin alignment, and it retains plenty of bold definition throughout the design. There are no significant marks relative to the assigned grade, the in-hand appearance quite smooth, and certainly visually appealing.
The Browning-6 vies with B-5 and B-7 as the second scarcest variety of the 1818-dated quarter issue. All three share the same obverse die, which is readily identifiable by repunching to star 9. The reverse of the 1818 B-6 appears in no other marriage. Despite the scarcity of survivors, a number of significant die states are known for this variety. That represented here is both the earliest and the rarest, struck from a perfect reverse die without cracks. The 2010 Rea et al. reference on early U.S. Mint quarters does not list this die state, but confusingly plates a perfect reverse example from the John Frost Collection on p. 99.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: An exceptionally rare variety in this die stage. One of the few opportunities I had to acquire the earliest die stage of the 1818 B-6, and a problem free example to boot.
