- Tompkins Die Stage 4/4, Rea et al. Die State c. A premium Choice AU example with plenty of soft mint luster and bold to sharp striking detail remaining. The surfaces are impressively smooth with few marks, and certainly none that are distracting during in-hand viewing. The entire package is dressed in richly original toning with mottled antique gold, cobalt blue, and pinkish-apricot iridescence backlighting steel-gray patina.<p>Representing a fascinating die state of this otherwise readily obtainable die pairing, both sides show clashmarks that are particularly bold and pronounced on the obverse. On that side one can see, among clashmarks from other reverse design elements the arrows, denomination and olive leaves above Liberty's cap, and the scroll (but not the letters in the Latin motto) below the bust. A great study piece for early quarter variety enthusiasts, and also an exceptional type candidate at the Choice AU grade level.<p><strong>Steve M. Tompkins Commentary:</strong> When this spectacular piece came up for auction it spoke to me like very few other coins had. The dies at this point of their life were a mess. It is no wonder that very few examples were struck before this obverse die was taken out to be lapped or retired. Neat coin!
