- San Francisco Mint Double Eagles circulated widely in the West, where hard money, and not banknotes were the foundation of the economy. This pleasing AU saw just a brief time in commercial channels and is an above average example with surfaces that are relatively smooth for the grade and boasts a rich orange gold toning. Perennially popular Civil War era issue that is always in demand. PCGS 82, NGC 184. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $4,000. The 1863-S is yet another date whose rarity and availability has changed in recent years. At one time, the 63-S was one of the rarest S-mint double eagles of the Civil War years. Thanks to discovery of the wrecks of the S.S. Republic and S.S. Brother Jonathan (does not seem to have been heavily represented in the Fairmont Collection, this date has become more available, but remains a major rarity in most Mint State grades. Cert. Number 82462959 PCGS # 8940
