- 1885 Liberty Eagle. Proof-66 Deep Cameo (PCGS). CAC. A gorgeous Gem Deep Cameo Proof of the date. Heavily frosted motifs and impressively deep mirror fields form an intense and stark cameo contrast with the bright yellow-gold devices seemingly afloat in a sea of molten gold. One glance and you will be instantly enthralled by the natural beauty of the piece; the fields exhibit the crinkly "orange peel" effect cherished by today's collecting community.<br /> <br /> From a modest mintage for the date of 65 pieces, with far fewer than that tally available to today's collectors; the PCGS website suggests "just 18 to 22 known." The present specimen readily outshines the example we offered in the <em>Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection</em> more than a decade ago (Part II, October 1999, Lot 1611), that specimen called Proof-64 by PCGS. In fairness to the Bass specimen, it was graded before the Cameo and Deep Cameo designations were in vogue, and if past experience is worth more than the proverbial plugged nickel, we suspect the Bass coin may be in a third-party holder sporting a finer grade today. Be that as it may, the present Gem is <strong><em>the finest Proof of the date certified by PCGS within any Proof designation, </em></strong>with no equals to challenge its reign as finest certified by the firm.
