- Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State P. Slightly marbled steel-olive and pewter gray patina blankets surfaces that reveal considerable softly frosted luster as the coin rotates under a light. Free of all but wispy handling marks, with bold to sharp strike detail throughout, this is a very nice Large Diameter Capped Bust quarter at the certified AU-53 grade level.
The Browning-4 pairing of 1828 features the only use of both the obverse and reverse dies. Although somewhat scarce, examples can usually be acquired in most circulated grades without too much effort, but nice AUs such as this can be elusive. The reverse is rotated approximately 15 degrees clockwise from normal coin alignment; most examples of this variety show some degree of clockwise rotation.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: If you look at enough 1828 B-4s you will discover that there seems to be more examples that have planchet errors than that are for other issues and die marriages in this series. I had a nice VF-35 as my set piece for almost 20 years that was in a PCGS error holder due to this feature. I looked long and hard for a better one that didn't have a planchet issue until finally finding and acquiring this coin.
